While there is limited scientific evidence on the effectiveness of acupuncture for autoimmune disorders, which are conditions where the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues, researchers have found evidence that suggests acupuncture may be beneficial for people with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and autoimmune thyroid disease.
Researchers found that acupuncture was effective in reducing pain, improving joint function, and reducing inflammation in people with rheumatoid arthritis in a study published in Rheumatology International (1). Other researchers conducted a review of data in the Journal of Integrative Medicine (2) and found that acupuncture improved symptoms of autoimmune thyroiditis, including fatigue, depression, and anxiety.
It's important to note that while acupuncture may provide some benefits, it should not be used as a sole treatment for autoimmune disorders, as these conditions typically require medical management and monitoring. If you are interested in trying acupuncture for your autoimmune disorder, it's best to consult with a licensed acupuncturist and your physician to determine if it is a suitable treatment option for you.
